The audio version of this baroque Swedish noir is performed with exemplary technique by Peter Noble. To this ear, his Swedish pronunciation is convincing, and he is sensitive to the phrasing of sentences and the emotions of characters, and there are a great many of both. The plot begins when a Swedish intelligence officer who has been running a top-secret agent wakes from a car crash with most of his memory gone. The kind and number of bad people, from corrupt police brass to Iraqi hooligans, who want to know what he's forgotten and whether he'll ever remember again is epic, but oddly low on tension as the author hasn't shown very clearly what's at stake, only what an incredible snarl it is.
