It’s 1859 in the Nebraska Territories, and Li Lian MacPherson adores her husband, Matthew Callahan, a doctor who thinks nothing of welcoming the wounded into their home. When a small band of highwaymen arrive on their doorstep, one with grievous wounds, he invites them in—but one of them, George Dalton, shoots and kills him. The devastated Li Lian is arrested for Matthew’s murder, but local butcher Roger Hawking breaks her out of jail, and they set off across the country to avenge her husband and rid the earth of Dalton, who may well be a supernatural entity. This fast-paced, beautifully written revenge tale, told by Li Lian to the child she carries, is a testament to the fierce love she has for her unborn child and the unbearable pain of the love she’s lost. The indomitable, relentless Li Lian is a force of nature who takes full advantage of her magical heritage and the awesome power that it affords her.

DEBUTDescending from a long line of witches, Li Lian met Matthew Callahan when she was 14. She ran away from her Missouri home and straight into trouble in a Texas saloon. Matthew saved her from being burned as a witch and returned her to her family. But she doesn't stay out of mischief for long, and after he rescues her again, Li Lian and Matthew begin a courtship that leads to marriage and a baby on the way. In 1859, now living in the Nebraska Territory, where Matthew serves as a local doctor, their happiness is destroyed when Matthew is killed by three men, one of whom is not quite human. Pregnant Li Lian immediately sets off to find the killers and exact her revenge. VERDICT Narrated in the form of a diary written for the protagonist's unborn daughter, this debut excels in setting a tense mood and introducing a prickly yet compelling heroine. Highly recommended for fans of weird Westerns like Lila Bowen's Wake of Vultures or Laura Anne Gilman's Silver on the Road.--MM
