O'Flaherty maintains the tension of his well-grounded sense of post-Civil War history while ratcheting up the punky side of steampunk and folk magic at the same breakneck pace as in this book's predecessor, King of the Cracksmen (2015). Returning to the forefront of these adventures is Liam McCool, whose Gram has invoked the spirit of Finn McCool within him, resulting in a newfound ability to use sorcery against his many foes. Plucky heroine Becky Fox is also around for the ride, as are Taoist alchemist Ambrose Chen and Sioux warchief Crazy Horse, who also are adept at magic. From the streets of New York to sleepy, sleazy Santa Monica, they fight automatons and prejudice, fly in aerial battleships, and crisscross the balkanized U.S. The extravagant action never lets up, even when meeting the likes of P. T. Barnum, Thomas Edison, and a host of other famous names who've taken much different turns in this rousing steampunk fantasy.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
