Gr 3-4-This title offers a fun introduction to computer science and does not overwhelm readers with jargon or pedagogy. Core concepts such as debugging and sequential processes are highlighted but are not the main focus. The text centers on developing a coding mentality through the recognition of examples that people encounter every day. Featured activities describe basic ideas and encourage children to extend their learning beyond the book. Prottsman uses a varied approach to explain the applications of coding and includes familiar examples (video games) and crafts (crochet) that incorporate fiber coding. Thinking like a coder is a common theme, which shows how computer science concepts are interwoven in daily activities. The vibrant hues on the cover reflect the attractive aesthetic associated with Crayola. The bright pops of color that permeate the backgrounds of every page can be distracting. Inclusive photographs of children and young adults are provided, which brings a lightness to the activities.
