Tilda has just lost her husband of 40 years; depressed and unmoored, she asks her daughter Laura to give her a year to grieve before worrying about asking her to make big decisions about her future. In the year that follows--the span of the book--Tilda tries to accept her situation and keep her depression at bay, but she gets involved in her neighbors' marriage crisis and, most importantly, gives help and support to her troubled 14-year-old granddaughter, Tilly, who's dealing with her own grief as well as gender confusion. Emotional support and a sympathetic ear come from her friend Bev and a chance at romance from new pal George. The story is shaped and strengthened by various topics, including gender, feminism, exploration of ethnic and religious roots, and love. It's weakened by the wooden dialog that is filled with poster-like sayings. Although Tilly is a bit flat, Tilda's character is fully drawn. VERDICT Readers who can relate to loss and family trials will enjoy Tilda's emotional journey.--Sonia Reppe, Stickney-Forest View P.L., IL
