Preschool-Grade 1 When a small black-and-white kitten appears at Olive's kitchen window, she invites the animal inside. Olive's mother notices the kitten's well-kept appearance and gently informs her daughter that the cat might already have a permanent home. She agrees Olive can take care of the ""stray"" but says that if someone comes looking for her, the kitten must be returned to her owner. For a full week, the feline stays and plays with Olive, and the girl believes the cat is hers forever. When the kitten goes out one day and doesn't return, Olive and her father discover that her rightful owner has taken her home. A devastated Olive gets a handle on her grief after a heartfelt talk with her father, vowing never to forget the delightful week she spent with the kitten. Plenty of white space makes the bold illustrations in teal, yellow, and black with touches of red stand out. The book concludes with a section geared toward parents that's useful when consoling disappointed children.
