Summoned to King Henry's court at Westminster in 1102, Sir Geoffrey Mappestone goes unwillingly, not trusting Henry's motives. As it turns out, Henry wants Geoffrey to investigate the claims of two rival Saxon coin makers. One accuses the other of shortchanging the king, who fears possible conspiracy affecting the country's economy. Since one of the alleged conspirators is his own sister, Geoffrey complies, enduring attempts on his virtue, his honor, and his life. Despite the hardships of medieval travel and hygiene, humor abounds, with persistent arguers, seducers, deceivers, and even a slippery-smart gay squire. A most involving--and highly recommended--historical mystery.
