Starred review from December 1, 2018
Grades 7-12 *Starred Review* Subjects like civil rights, the environment, the LGBTQ movement, and women's rights have been written about in many youth books but often in bits and pieces. So kudos to the Push for Social Change series (4 titles) for providing comprehensive looks at how these movements began, progressed, and, in some cases, are faring today. Despite the fact each book has a different author, the series' hallmark is the clarity of the writing and a deep dig into the history, often highlighting personal stories or pieces of history that are lesser known. The Environmental Movement begins with the Cuyahoga River catching fire in 1969, due to waste, and extends into twenty-first-century concerns, such as climate change. The images throughout are well chosen, and visually accented time lines helpfully open each volume. Excellent additions to history collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
