Gr 4-6-While on a hunting expedition, Bog and his father, who are trolls, are ambushed by humans. The assailants lure Bog's father into the sunlight with tragic results. He falls victim to Odin's curse and is instantly turned to stone by his exposure to the sun. Having been raised to distrust humans, Bog becomes a true hater of the species after losing his beloved father. His mission becomes avenging his death by going after the Troll Hunter who trains humans to trick and kill trolls. While on his vengeful quest, he learns about the legend of a buried "nose stone" which can reverse the stone process and save the troll who has been cursed. He vows to find and capture this magical stone and help his father. Joining him on his quest are an interesting assortment of companions- some human, some troll. Bog learns much about himself on this journey including the fact that his mother was human, making him only half-troll. The author has created an intriguing, fantasy world of deep forests, magic, and friendship. Along with the magic and fantasy are realistic problems, such as the antagonistic relationship between his mother and father. Readers will be delighted with this parallel world set in modern times. Give this to those who love fantasy, such as J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series and Suzanne Collins's Gregor the Overlander (Scholastic, 2003). Kids will identify with Bog's struggles and challenges.-Tina Martin, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, IL
