Creepshow: The Cursed

Gr 6-10-This book is comprised of two scary novellas-"The Green Mountain Monster" and "The Chatelaine." In "The Green Mountain Monster," Randy and Bill are two poor kids growing up in the 1950s in a small West Virginia coal town. While camping, they see what looks like a floating figure with red eyes. After this scary experience, Bill is in denial but Randy wants to investigate further. With the help of Eddie, the editor of the town paper, the friends stumble upon the Green Mountain Monster in all its creepy wonder. In "The Chatelaine," Maisie is a fan of vintage fashion. She loves styling her hair and choosing outfits from different decades. She also loves going to the flea market where she stumbles upon a tent selling a mysterious chatelaine-a piece of jewelry that holds objects that women of the past found necessary, such as a thimble and scissors. The day Maisie decides to wear it, she is transported through time to the Victorian age, but all is not what it seems. Soon, she is stuck in time and must escape a sinister plot to harm her. Both stories are very different and interesting; easy to read but creepy enough to grab readers' attention. If readers enjoy the tales, additional research can be done about chatelaines and the mysterious real-life Brown Mountain Lights. Each story includes introductory illustrations, and main characters appear to be white. VERDICT Young readers will delight in the mystery of both stories.-Maeve Dodds, Charlotte Mecklenburg Lib., NC
