Grades 10-1 Aside from her broken heart, Peach has a good life. But in the summer of her nineteenth year, she takes a job at a caf' in what was once Abbotsford Convent and her life changes forever. She always accepted that she was adopted, but she never knew her family history was tightly bound to the convent. Four generations of mothers and daughters are brought to life in this story set in Australia between the early 1900s and the cusp of the new millennium. Told without apology for the women's true feelings, or forgiveness for the way women were treated by the Catholic churchin habit or outMcCarthy puts hard realities front and center. In this no-holds-barred tale of longing, the overriding melancholy is given a sheer coating of hope. As the plot pulls the past into the present, we are reminded that our choices, as well as those supposedly made in our best interests, impact more than our immediate world. Adults should be reading this one, too.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
