Babies are born no matter the time or the weather, so it's no surprise to midwife Martha Cade that she is called out on a particularly brutal winter night to assist with yet another birth. However, there's something very wrong in this household, and that mystery runs throughout inspirational star Parr's latest historical romance. Medical practice is still primitive in 1831, but Martha has safely delivered many babies in Trinity, Pennsylvania, a fact that does not set well with the local doctor, who is usually the second choice where births are concerned. Between the temporary return of her runaway daughter and a persistent suitor, Martha's personal life is in upheaval. The talented Parr has captured the realities of life in the early years of the country, writing a beautiful homage to the midwife, one of the unsung heroes in history. Martha's passion for her calling shines through the pages. Although this is a sequel to Parr's excellent The Midwife's Tale (2015), it also works well as a stand-alone novel.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
