Gr 1-3-Short paragraphs of simply written text describe the featured animals' key body parts and how they function, e.g., the kangaroo's tail and pouch; the orangutan's hands and feet; the poison frog's brightly colored, slime-coated skin, etc. Behavior, diet, and care and development of the young are briefly addressed. Facing the text on each spread is a full-page, sharp, color close-up of one or more of the featured animals in their natural habitat; a smaller blow-up, in a circular format, appears above the text and, in most sections, highlights the body parts discussed. Other shots include the animal babies. "Dart Frogs" depicts a variety of species, most of which are identified in captions by common names. The few scientific terms employed are defined in simple terms in a glossary at the beginning of each title; a world map, shaded to indicate geographical range; and a photo diagram of the animal's life cycle are also included. Other introductions feature these animals, but most are aimed at a higher reading level, such as Sandra Markle's excellent "Outside and Inside Kangaroos" (S & S, 1999). Bredeson's simply written and colorful titles will provide younger readers with satisfying first introductions to these fascinating creatures."Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library"
