Grades 3-6 The entries in the Discoveries Around the World series (7 titles) relate influential innovations from every continent. Each book begins with a brief geographic overview that includes a world map with the continent in bold. The remaining text describes the continent's environment, science, technology, and culture and profiles scientists and engineers (many of whom are women and people of color) who have revolutionized these areas. In the process, the volumes connect ancient origins to modern STEM, and a variety of color photos documents these key features. In addition to inventions in writing, clean water, and travel, Africa looks at the end of apartheid and its cultural barriers. A concluding, double-page spread uses thumbnails of the innovations to identify their location on the continent. This series offers a fresh, accessible blend of social studies and STEM.
