Death has come to claim his "Cobweb Bride," and until he finds her, the terminally and the mortally wounded continue to die. The undead roam the roads, and nobles from many countries send their "spare" daughters in search of Death's keep in hopes of becoming his bride. To spare her dying grandmother any more pain, Percy, a young farm girl of no particular beauty, makes the journey on her own, determined to succeed where others failed. Set in an alternate Renaissance Europe, this series opener by Russian-born Nazarian combines the stylistic manner of a folktale with the trappings of an epic fantasy, one driven by compassion rather than heroics. VERDICT Fans of period fantasy and those who like stories that feel like fairy tales should appreciate this skillful novel by the twice Nebula Award-nominated author of Dreams of the Compass Rose and The Duke in His Castle.
