Preschool-G Crisp, colorful photographs, many with close-up views and ranging from cucumbers and chocolate bars to giraffes and cheetahs, will draw young readers into these concept books in the First Math series. The photographs take up most of the page, with a phrase or sentence offering an explanation of the concept. Although Patterns doesn't define the concept, it is filled with good examples of patterns (e.g., stripes and spirals) and how they can be found everywhere, from ice-cream cones to bathrooms. It also explains how numbers, time, and seasons follow patterns. A simple activity concludes each book.
