Gr 4-7-This funny book features poor, hardworking Martin Wettmore and rich prankster TrixiWilder, who are forced to work together on the school newspaper. These stereotypical characters move through a predictable plot that is enhanced by a photocopier that folds origami animals and fills the answers in when tests are copied and faulty sprinkler heads that ruin every item in the library. Martin loves reporting only the facts, has high standards of spelling and grammar, but is unable to sell copies of the newspaper. Trixi creates her own misspelled versions of events, featuring teachers losing their voices, a sword-swallowing crossing guard, and snow in September. These papers sell out. The newspaper's future remains uncertain as Martin and Trixi continue to produce separate editions. Of course, when they work together, they make a profit and raise money for the library. Readers may enjoy the zany mood and creative photocopier."Debbie S. Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI"

Grades 4-6 Perfectionist Martin Wettmore understands quite well the problems plaguing print journalists nationwide. As editor (and only staff member) of his failing school newspaper, he is faced with a difficult choice: take on Trixi Wilder, renowned prankster, as a writer and dig the paper out of its financial hole, or shutter the Upland Green Examiner. While Martin likes his articles bland but factualthe banner headline on the schools library flood reads Library Experiences Increase in Water ContentTrixi sees no problem with outright fabrications, as with her feature Maple Trees Fite (sic) Back After Being Trimmed!!! The first edition with Trixis contributions is duplicated on a photocopier being serviced by the mysterious Merlin Pen, and magically all of the outlandish stories come true. There is much humorous butting of heads, but together the two devise a plan to boost paper sales and benefit the destroyed library. This plot-driven caper is light on depth but is still a perky and engaging addition to the ranks of funny school stories for middle readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
