Windows XP (see Computer Media, LJ 1/04) keeps chugging along; guides covering Service Pack 2 (SP2) and other developments serve upgraders and new users. For beginners to intermediate users, Show Me! touts live online companion software, which was not accessible at the time of this review. It highlights new features in XP and SP2 and takes a task-based, step-by-step approach, with labeled screen shots and case studies. A troubleshooting guide suffices as an index to task-based solutions, and an appendix covers installing XP, updating to SP2, transferring files and settings, and using PowerToys. Too much information is lacking, unfortunately: e.g., the book devotes only one page to changing registry settings but fails to warn about the damage that can be done. Recommended, with reservations, for medium and larger libraries. For intermediate users, Power Hound covers both Home and Professional editions, giving tips, tricks, add-ons, and shortcuts to make Windows usage easier, faster, and more productive. Informal prose ("few cycles short of a Happy Meal") and an infectious enthusiasm welcome readers to experiment and enjoy. A recommended supplement to how-to guides; for all libraries. Hacking 's CD includes registry hacks, templates, tools, and the text of the book in PDF format. Hacks here range from using TweakUI to enhance Windows' look and capabilities to clearing temp files and installing and using personal firewalls. For larger libraries. For beginning to intermediate users, 50 Things moves step by step through common tasks, but it skims too quickly through some features and mentions add-ons like pop-up blockers without giving specific examples or telling where to find them. An optional purchase.
