These three books target hands-on hardware hacking geeks who want to extend their love of technology to their homes and cars. The nicely illustrated "Geek House" requires some knowledge of PCs, electronics, and mechanical construction; software can be downloaded and used as is or modified. Beginning with an overview of X10 technology, the book includes projects that range from building a home television server and a security monitoring system to muting the TV automatically when the phone rings or creating an automatic sprinkler control system. Appendixes cover working with software, working with PC hardware, and the companion web site. For medium and larger libraries. The more basic "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Automation" covers similar ground but focuses on using X10 for projects such as controlling security, lighting, and thermostats, accessing your system remotely, and controlling appliances. Appendixes cover integrating X10 with other home control systems and troubleshooting X10. It lacks the geeky enthusiasm of "Geek House" but is a serviceable guide to basic do-it-yourself home automation; for medium and larger libraries. For power users and do-it-yourselfers, "Geek My Ride" provides step-by-step instructions for projects ranging from integrating a game console to adding Internet access and video surveillance. Introductory chapters provide extensive background on topics such as power and temperature considerations -essential reading to avoid harming either add-on technology or the car itself. A companion web site recommends places to purchase tools, parts, and technologies mentioned in the book. Enthusiastic prose and clear directions recommend this to medium and larger libraries.
