Home networking is essential for today's multiple-PC and -device households (see Computer Media, LJ 7/04). These guides help beginners learn how networks work and how to set up and make the most of their own home networks. Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003; not surprisingly, in its Visual Do-It-Yourself Guide, examples, configuration instructions, screen shots, and photos all show Linksys gear. It walks beginners clearly and thoroughly through creating and securing a home network before ending with a discussion of entertainment options. A nice feature at the end of each chapter called "What Went Wrong" offers troubleshooting advice and tips. For all libraries; Linksys is popular, and most concepts are extensible to other manufacturers. Absolute Beginner's Guide is more thorough, including more information on, for example, choosing and installing a broadband connection and add-on products. A little more intimidating to beginners; for medium and larger libraries. How Networks Work updates older editions, providing a history of and reference to network communications from the telegraph and the modem to broadband and media convergence. Large full-color illustrations and succinct explanations make this a useful reference for all libraries.
