Edward Lewis's strident and somehow urgent narration leaches much of the import from these two religious self-improvement classics. One cannot deny the old texts are musty in this new millennium. But their core messages and techniques--focusing on a reverence for the inner life and an awareness of higher things and noble living--are made more dated for the lack of an appealing voice. Purists and clerics may want to add this old-school presentation to their collections. D.J.B. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine

This brief book is lovely, compassionate, and moving. A series of notes and letters from Brother Lawrence on the how to keep the presence of God in mind and heart, the work's clarity and directness allow it to succeed where more ornate tracts might fail. Scott Brick's delivery matches the text well. Brick speaks clearly and steadily, allowing Lawrence's heartfelt words to come through him. He sounds genuinely concerned about the people Lawrence prays for. The organizational structure of the book fits the audio format well, with several short sections that can be listened to independently. G.T.B. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine
