Pigeons are the background scenery or extras in movies: so common they are invisible. Science writer Humphries was disappointed in findingferal urban pigeons in every foreign city she visited, decrying yet another sign of creeping homogeneityuntil she read Darwins Origin of Species. Darwins use of the ubiquitous domestic pigeon as a symbol of diversity sparkedHumphries interest in the lowly rock dove and hatched this highly readable account of how pigeons became intertwined with humans. Probably the earliest domesticated birds (ca. 3000 BCE), the original cliff-dwelling rock doves gladly accepted the newly settled humans buildings as artificial cliffs and their spilled grain as food. Humans then brought pigeons with them wherever they traveled. One scientist Humphries talks tostates thatferal city pigeons adaptability to humans has made them superdoves. From observing pigeon family life in alleyways, finding the highest density of pigeons in the treeless inner city, following pigeon people as they toss stale bread, or stalking truly wild pigeons in Sardinia, Humphries makes us care about the lowly urban pigeon.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)
