Israel focuses on the increasing use of Twitter as a business tool to maintain contact with customers, to troubleshoot problems, and to brainstorm new ideas. Coauthor of Naked Conversations (2006), a book critical of the excesses of marketing, Israel notes the growing trend toward social media, including Twitter, the leading software in what is called microblogging. Twitter traveled a circuitous route from a system to allow software developers to keep track of each other to a fast and succinct communications tool. Israel profiles several companies that are using Twitter: Dell, Comcast, H & R Block, IBM, Best Buy, several airlines, and news media companies. Governments and nonprofits are also using Twitter to stay in touch with constituents and clients. Israel offers a primer for readers on how to get started using Twitter, its benefits and drawbacks, dangers, and enormous appeal. Readers interested in Twitter for business or personal reasons will find this a valuable resource.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
