White (coauthor, Jammed Up) and Fradella (coauthor, America's Courts and the Criminal Justice System), both professors of criminology and criminal justice at Arizona State University, broach the topic of the use of stop and frisk as a widespread crime-control strategy leading to the violation of constitutional rights of minorities. They argue that not only is this practice common but many times it is performed without summons or arrest. Although stop and frisk is typically viewed as a New York City problem, its occurrence, along with racial profiling, is seen throughout the United States. The book addresses the history and legal traditions of stop and frisk, setting the stage for an examination of current cases such as Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Freddie Gray, as well as other notable cases in history. The final two chapters consider how 21st-century policing will continue the practice, and that police departments need to focus on the evidence of racial discrimination over other types of reform. References as well as charts, graphs, images of report sheets, and police guidelines are included. VERDICT Recommended for legal, political science, and criminology students and scholars.--Nathalie Reid, Univ. of California, Los Angeles
