Although recovery takes the afflicted through the steps of discipline, humility, and self-realization, there are also the possibilities of peace and joy, claims author Griffin (One Breath at a Time), who explains that one can have satisfying relationships, productive work, and fun in recovery. He presents a series of reflections and practices, the former assisting readers to understand their current unhappiness, how they get in the way of future happiness, and to achieve ways to bring peace into their lives. His principles include active methods of exploring those states, including mindfulness and meditation. The exercises focus on living congruently with one's calling and in all areas of life, whether choosing foods to eat or people to love. VERDICT While most in recovery have experienced serenity and joy simply from their freedom from addiction, Griffin adds another layer.
