Starred review from December 15, 2017
The revised and expanded Encyclopedia of American Civil Rights and Liberties is comprehensive, balanced, accurate, and up-to-date. The work is enlarged from three volumes to four, with 683 alphabetically arranged entries, increased from 627. As in the earlier edition, it covers laws, Supreme Court decisions, historical developments, social movements, prominent persons, groups and organizations, and pertinent government agencies. Some entries, such as First Amendment, have subsections for users to quickly locate information. A full table of contents and a guide to related topics (such as freedom of expression) are in the front of each volume. References and suggestions for further reading at each entry are very helpful. The contributors, listed at the entries, are mainly academic specialists, and the writing is clear and consistent. Volume 4 includes the text of 40 pertinent primary documents, a table of cases in the set, an extensive bibliography, the affiliations of the 218 contributors, and an accurate index. Though there have been other reference volumes on the topics, this inclusive, outstanding work provides current and historical coverage and conveys the changes in controversial and enduring national issues. Recommended highly for academic libraries and for public libraries as needed.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
