An intriguing look back over the 1900s, Sheumaker's (Love Entwined, 2007) appraisal scans 10 categories of technological advances and popular transmutations. Grouping a moonshine still and the electric chair alongside shopping carts, Pullman cars, and Superman comic books, she rejects easy summations of a century of productivity. Mundane itemscellophane, Schwinn bicycles, typewriters, Princess phonescontrast major shifts in everyday life, especially the social implications of Gay Pride buttons, police revolvers, and Enovid, the first birth-control pill. Commentary muses on improved cleansers for hair, electric wheelchairs for outdoor use, microwaves, and the expansion of religious instruction from Bible storybooks to displays of faith on banners and rubber bracelets. The 14-page index points out insightful views on the FBI, STDs, animated film, computers, and the Negro League. A valid study of intrinsic and extrinsic worth, the source presents an organized synopsis of changing times, interests, and needs. A useful work for public, junior-high, and high-school libraries.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
