In this dramatic retelling of the story of Martha, sister of Lazarus, Landsem's protagonist, a pillar of Jewish society, harbors a shameful secret; she gave her innocence to the wrong man in a night of youthful passion. Only two people know her secret: Lazarus and Simon, her intended husband, who is also a Pharisee. When Lazarus falls gravely ill, Martha must decide whether to send for Jesus to heal him and risk Simon's betrayal, or to remain a silent prisoner in Simon's house as her brother dies. Martha needs a miracle, and the one she receives transforms her life. VERDICT Landsem's sympathetic and poignant portrait of a familiar biblical figure is a well-crafted tale of strength, hope, and love. With a strong female protagonist who demonstrates exceptional grace under duress, this novel is sure to stir lively debate among Christian book groups. Admirers of Tosca Lee's biblical historicals will want to get acquainted with this rising new author (The Thief; The Well).
