Gr 2-5-Readers who want to learn about bugs will find lots of clearly written, abundantly illustrated information presented in well-designed pages. The book is divided into five parts. Part one defines what a bug is and provides a full-page labeled diagram indicating body parts. The opposite page shows a variety of insect mouths and legs. Part two looks closely at a bug's relatives (insects, spiders, scorpions, millipedes, worms, sea snails, and more). Many fascinating illustrations portray bugs in their natural habitats. Part three highlights bug behavior: pollinating, working in groups, bugs that glow, bug disguises, and bug defenses. Part four describes where bugs live. Bugs that live underwater, in caves, in mounds, and in extreme environments are depicted. The final part emphasizes how these insects help our planet and what humans can do to keep them safe. Among the suggestions are avoiding the use of harmful pesticides and building a bug hotel. The clear headings and subheadings emphasize the main ideas. Vocabulary words are clearly introduced. Illustrations are colorful, varied, and packed with information. The overall design is both welcoming and intriguing. Readers will build their understanding of the natural world. VERDICT An excellent choice for browsing or careful study. Also, a fine mentor text to study how to present information in an appealing way. -Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York
