Preschool-Grade 1 Books in the Machines with Power! series (4 new titles) present powerful vehicles in the fields of construction and transportation. Each text introduces the subject, notes the jobs it can do, and points out some of its visible parts. Designed for beginning readers, the pages feature short sentences, simple words, large type, and clearly reproduced photos. In some of the pictures, major elements of the machine are circled and labeled. Two appended, illustrated pages reiterate those elements and their roles in carrying out the vehicles' functions. Cranes shows a floating crane, a tower crane, and a crane truck lifting heavy loads at construction sites for buildings and bridges. Given that many two- and three-year-old children are fascinated by mighty machines and intrigued by books with short texts and colorful photos, this attractive series holds appeal for both beginning readers and younger preschoolers.
