Gr 3-6-Rebecca Weston writes in her diary of her family's decision to leave Baltimore to travel the Oregon Trail. Her parents sell everything they own and buy supplies to make the dangerous trip. Children learn about the sacrifices made to try and start a new life far from home. Simple things like making meals and building fires are much harder when on the trail. Supplies needed and their cost; dangers from sickness and wild animals; and the many reasons for death along the way are all included in the 11-year-old's diary. Black-and-white sketches are well done, and the characters are easily differentiated. Simple paneling makes this graphic novel easy to read, even for novices to the format. A good addition as an introduction to an Oregon Trail unit or for supplemental materials on the subject.-Mariela Siegert, Westfield Middle School, Bloomingdale, IL
