Short chapters limn the history of each event, accompanied by a time line noting milestones. Rules, equipment, venues, and how an individual or team qualifies are also covered; the Boston Marathon's rigorous qualifying process includes competing in "feeder" races. Fascinating facts (the average pit stop is "just 10-14 seconds") and anecdotes fill these pages. Excellent conclusions consider the impact of these events: Little League World Series notes that 42 participants have gone on to Major League careers and that the event draws a huge television audience. VERDICT Both readable and balanced, these well-crafted books help young sports fans connect with social studies and history.
