Super Baseball Infographics

Gr 3-5-Lerner keeps the ball rolling with these books (previous series include "Super Science Infographics" and "Super Social Studies Infographics"). As with previous titles, these are closer to attractively presented factoids than true infographics. However, there is plenty of fun material for sports fans (diagram of a baseball, player sizes over the years), and these bright, well-designed offerings are a cut above most athletic-oriented titles.

Grades 3-5 Each page spread in this small volume offers a readily visualized aspect of professional baseball, from the materials that compose the ball to the physics of throwing a curveball to the statistics of player height and World Series wins by team. This attractive compilation of trivia is tailor-made for fact-hungry middle-graders eager to get their hands on information as quickly as possible and with minimal reading. Though in some instances the text is small and difficult to read, for the most part, each graphics-heavy spread neatly and effectively depicts its topic. For beginning researchers using print materials for projects, this is a solid starting point, though some of the measures can be a little misleading, such as one infographic illustrating rising wages of ballplayers during the last century that fails to mention inflation. Back matter includes a helpful list of web resources, which will be especially crucial for students, since baseball stats and facts change frequently.
