Grades 1-4 Though aerospace engineering may seem an unusual reading choice for young children, Ferrie, himself a physicist, has a fair bit of experience when it comes to introducing kids to science, as demonstrated in his Everyday Science Academy series (4 titles). Here, Dr. Chris explains to an enthusiastic, talking red kangaroo the forces of motion required for flight. Ferrie does a surprisingly good job of breaking down the concepts of lift, thrust, weight, and drag for young readers, and even if one or two ideas fly over their heads, the cartoonish artwork helps illustrate the topic being explained. Red Kangaroo fills the role of an inquisitive, flight-seeking child, asking realistic questions and putting Dr. Chris' answers into kid-friendly contexts. Useful back matter includes a quiz and two age-appropriate activities that demonstrate lift and drag.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
