Gr 6-9-In this sequel to Walker of Time (1993) and Walker's Journey Home (1995, both Harbinger), 12-year-old Tag is ready to leave the 1200s and the Hopi ancient ones in an attempt to return to the present. Along the way, the voice of the ancient ones' seer and magician echoes through his mind, telling him, "Now is the time for you to do what you were sent to do." The highlights of Tag's earlier adventures are slipped in as needed, allowing this novel to stand on its own. When non-English words are used, the meanings are clear from context, or else the translation is smoothly worked into the text. Vick makes excellent choices of words and style, capturing readers' interest early on and compelling them to experience Tag's fears, humiliations, and longings. They will join him in his growing desire to save the ruins of the ancient ones from neglect, destruction, and pot-hunting thieves as he makes six jumps forward in time, meeting and influencing people, both fictional and historical, along the way. Tag's yearning to do what must be done and his frustration at taking on enormous responsibilities in the face of many setbacks ring true. Although this story is packed with important concepts and interesting tidbits of American history, what readers will relish most are the adventure and excitement. Great reading all around.-Darcy Schild, Schwegler Elementary School, Lawrence, KS
