This 75th anniversary edition of Stein’s 1939 story of a girl named Rose returns to the original proportions, type and vivid pink paper and blue ink of the original, explains Thacher Hurd in a foreword; it also offers an essay from Edith Thacher Hurd, which first appeared in a 1986 edition and includes written exchanges between Stein and Clement Hurd. Thirty-four brief chapters written in Stein’s characteristically melodic, repetitive language follow the musings, travels, and eventual “happily ever after” of Rose and her cousin (or is he?) Willie. While Stein’s writing has always had its critics, this volume will be a treasure trove for admirers of her singular vision and Hurd’s always charming artwork.
