Morrisey, author of " Turn Four" , has reported on NASCAR for many years, and he brilliantly evokes the sport. For instance, riding in a racecar is like a "cross between a speedboat and a Magic Fingers motel bed." Morissey chronicles every race with an insider's feel for the cars, the tracks, the tactics. But his story, of a young phenom, Chance Reynolds, whose eye is injured and who becomes a chaplain to drivers, is so preachy that it's off-putting, even though Chance's dedication to God is perfectly believable. NASCAR is an evangelical scene in some ways, and Morrisey's subplot about a father and son has appeal, but the sermons pile up faster than the cars.
