What happens when a fairly well-known business author and coach in speaking and executive presence enters new territory? In this case, Monarth (author of The Confident Speaker and others) packs way too much information into his 290 pages, with numbered lists way too voluminous to remember. The topicinfluenceencourages this type of data pile-on because it touches on behavior, motivation, attitude, and all things psychological. Relying on and incorporating expert opinions, like those of Daniel Goleman on emotional intelligence, overshadows the import of Monarth's own contributions. The content is appealing; reviewing, for instance, the six steps to active listening or the 10 ways to influence up helps refocus challenges and take advantage of latent opportunities. On the other hand, his chapter on influencing the public's impression of your organization is a bit sketchy: ask any reputation/PR specialist to comment. All in all, a valiant effort that sings only when Monarth concentrates on what he knows and practices well.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
