A few Americans may have heard of British actor/playwright Alan Bennett, if only for the mischievous review BEYOND THE FRINGE (1960) and his international hit, THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III (1992). Therefore, the appearance of this recording in the U.S. is most welcome to strengthen our awareness of a prolific and ubiquitous figure of English stage, television, and radio. In the comedy KAFKA'S DICK, the Czech writer's ghost appears to a suburban insurance salesman. Bennett stars in the satirical Forty Years On as a stuffy, old headmaster. AN ENGLISHMAN ABROAD concerns a chance encounter in Moscow between a notorious spy and a famous actress. All three superbly acted plays exhibit a youthful mischief and a mature undertone of bitterness. A treat for anyone who appreciates literate wit. Y.R.
