In 2006, milk truck driver Charles Roberts entered the Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, Amish schoolhouse, bound 10 youngsters dressed in pinafores and bonnets, and methodically shot them and himself. As Kelly Dolan delivers this account of the 2006 massacre, his characterization of the shooter is calculating and cold. His portrayal of the children is emotional, especially his poignant depiction of 13-year-old Marion's request to be shot first. While the tragedy is disturbing, the book goes on to reveal the real story of unconditional love and "ruthless forgiveness" that the Amish community, including the parents of the murdered children, extended to the murderer and his family. Dolan's warm and moving portrayal captures the spirit of the Amish "wall of friendship." Together, authors and narrator make this work is an unforgettable demonstration of Jesus Christ's command to forgive. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
