After books featuring Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, the concluding book in Whyte's Guardians trilogy (Robert the Bruce, 2013; The Forest Laird, 2010) takes Andrew Murray as its subject. Though perhaps less known than Bruce and Wallace, Murray, a renowned military and political leader, played a critical role in the First War of Scottish independence. All events recounted by narrator and minor player Father James Wallace, cousin, best friend, and confessor of Wallace, lead up to the improbable and glorious Scottish victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. As with Whyte's previous books, the characters all play second fiddle to the unfolding historical events, which are chronicled in painstaking detail. Scottish home rule was and is a hot topic, and Whyte, as always, does an admirable job of dissecting and disseminating the origins of this epic struggle. Readers who love meaty historical and military sagas will relish this one.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
