At the Saltillo hospital bedside of his prostitute mother dying of leukemia, narrator Julián conjures up the major events of his life, much like an interior monolog, in order to alleviate the emotional trauma of the ordeal and for therapeutic consolation. The author recalls a family always on the move; the frosty relationship with his siblings; seven long-term affairs, including the latest, with Mónica; drug addiction; and artistic visits to Germany and Cuba. Herbert seamlessly blends genres--fiction, memoir, and documentary--as he effortlessly flips from the present death scene to earlier events in his life and to contemporary Mexican politics. Poet and musician Herbert expanded a short story into this 2011 work, his first to be translated into English, here rendered so fluidly that it reads like an original. The title is a play on cradle song, a lullaby sung by a mother, to a tomb song, here sung by the son to the mother. VERDICT A sardonic and often poignant phantasmagoria composed in vibrant prose with touches of bittersweet pathos.--Lawrence Olszewski, North Central State Coll., Mansfield, OH
