What determines the importance and long-lasting impact of leadership? Lieutenant general and former West Point superintendent Caslen and psychologist Matthews examine the qualities of character that make a leader worth following. The loss of a great leader can lead to a decline in morale, whether it be in the armed forces or in business. Caslen and Matthews believe in character education being taught in schools, chiefly how character provides benefits to the individual and to the world. They illustrate the high points of optimal character in individuals like Barry Bridger, who survived harrowing captivity as a U.S. Air Force POW at the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War, as well as businesses like Johnson & Johnson that managed through unimaginable crises, like the Tylenol-tampering murders. The opposite end of the spectrum, where there is a dearth of good character and honesty, is demonstrated in the sex-abuse scandals that rocked Penn State and Michigan State. The authors' combined experience culminates in a fascinating study of leadership.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
