Pop Painting

Artist d'Errico practices a contemporary style of painting called pop surrealism, in which subject matter is often inspired by pop culture but not restrained by reality, bringing together elements of fantasy, manga, cosplay, and graffiti, resulting in whimsical and playful visual expressions of emotion. The book provides an inside view of the author's working process with many short chapters addressing inspiration; the use of intuition in art; tools; preliminary sketches; composition; working with and evoking emotion; and blending color. A longer section is full of step-by-step exercises for the reader to experiment with and explore. The last chapter discusses professional issues facing artists today, including dealing with negative criticism and presenting one's artwork to potential galleries and clients. VERDICT Teens and younger artists are the ideal audience for this book.
