There's a subject-matter void that few books or online courses can address: learning how to lead. Marshall Goldsmith's What Got You Here Won't Get You There is one standout in the genre. With that in mind, career coach and leadership trainer Santoro does offer a good alternative to face-to-face coaching sessions, emphasizing authenticity and the gutsiness to follow one's instincts. Her road map is a non-sequential list of activities: practice self-promotion (without self-aggrandizement); emphasize problem solutions; build a dynamic network; don't be afraid to ask; avoid "justs" and "buts" in written and spoken language; trust your gut. Each section not only weaves in personal and client anecdotes, but also captures in memorable phrases the things that make a leader better: practice the pregnant pause (i.e., listen); is it "I can't" or "I choose not to"?; radio silence is not a no; and, in today's remote workplace, remember to schedule check-ins. Nothing radical here except good and honest common sense.
