The fourth installment in the Vanguards series is extremely short, but Nicholas still manages to cram in pack loyalty, family ties, and true love. Even in the world of were-animals, cultural traditions hold sway. In rural Mongolia and China, having pure blood is still important. Chinese werewolf Katrina knows her duty is to breed the next generation of shifters. After her parents sell her to an abusive man named Chen, she flees to America and regains her confidence thanks to the love of a good man. Tyler is an atypical hero, a real estate agent with no fighting skills, but when Chen hunts down Katrina, she and Tyler both get to demonstrate their strengths. The backdrop of shifter politics provides an intriguing twist to this otherwise conventional story, and readers will long for a more in-depth exploration of the various clashing cultures.
