"Second mothers,""independent spirits,""New York aunts,""role models,""avenging angels"--aunties of all sorts get their due in this medley of personal essays on the bond between aunts, nieces and nephews. The contributors--who are, for the most part, lesser-known journalists, poets, artists, novelists, professors and critics--represent a diverse range of cultures, from African American to Irish Catholic to South Asian. Sturgis, who edits Essence.com, writes of her"special connection" with her Aunt Mildred, a woman who"helped to validate my aspirations when I wasn't sure I was entitled to them." In another essay,"Aunt Moe Gets Reborn," elementary school teacher Dennis Donoghue writes about his newly widowed aunt's determination to find love again. A few of the authors share poems and recipes. Although some of the contributions are more saccharine than poignant, the best pieces do an impressive job of celebrating the important roles aunts play in family life.
