Wulfstan Wynstede's one dream in life is about to come true. After five years' training at Monseigneur Duclair's Military School in Lisieux and one summer spent teaching a new group of students, Wulfstan is finally going to have the opportunity to test his mettle on the battlefield when Prince Edward arrives in France. Joining the prince's invasionary force into Gascony, Wulfstan proves to have a gift for warfare, and he is eventually knighted by the prince for his service at the Battle of Poitiers. Unfortunately, the injuries Wulfstan sustains in the very same battle eventually cost him the use of his left arm. When the prince's men return to England, Wulfstan finds that the Black Prince still has need of his services. Assigned to the prince's household at Berkhamsted Castle, Wulfstan meets the love of his life: Beulah Horst. Reminiscent of the movie A Knight's Tale, Bennett expertly evokes both the glitter and grime of medieval England in her latest richly detailed novel, which should tempt readers who enjoy hero-driven historical fiction.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
