King tells the story of Thomas Galvin, the son of Irish farmers, the brother of London construction mogul M. J. Galvin, and a Catholic priest. The novel begins as Tom leaves the family farm to work as a laborer in his brothers burgeoning construction business in London. He witnesses the abuses and discrimination other Irish laborers face in 1960s England and the shady dealings that form the foundation of his brothers business. Although M. J. attempts to make Tom his prot'g', Tom decides to follow his calling into the seminary. Despite his success as a man of the cloth, Tom also sees the underbelly of the priesthood and all its betrayals. Whether digging trenches in London or studying Italian at the Vatican, Tom carries his Irish heritage with him. King offers a lively and absorbing look at the moral quandaries that grow from the intersection of Irish history and religion.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
