Fischer, author of the likably eccentric Voyage to the End of the Room (2004), creates another memorable character in Tyndale Corbett, a guy whose brilliant solution to his relentless, unlucky life is to pretend that he's God. In Miami on a bogus business trip, Tyndale realizes he doesn't want to go back to Britain and his drab existence. So, casting about for an easy way to keep himself in Florida and acknowledging that getting an actual job is out of the question, he does a bit of research and figures he can keep himself going for quite a while if he can convince people he's, um, God. This is a snappy comic adventure, narrated by sad-sack Tyndale, who can never quite believe that his patently ludicrous plan actually seems to be workinguntil, that is, he gets mixed up with a particularly troubling church and its equally troubling leaders. Now Tyndale realizes his plan of pretending to come back from the dead might involve some actual dying. Wry and witty and laugh-out-loud funny, the book is sure to be a hit with fans of offbeat comedies.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
